Canvas is canvas, right? I mean, you see ads for printing your photos on canvas just about everywhere - from Walgreens to Costco and Shutterfly to Canvas Online companies. Some have promotions where you can get your photos printed on canvas for pennies on the dollar! So, what are the types of canvases and what is the real difference between them?
There are actually quite a few differences in types of canvas, but I want to focus on Gallery Wrapped Canvas vs. the specialty product we carry here at the Kimberlin Gray studio, the HD CanvasPRO.
A gallery wrapped canvas is where your image is printed on canvas material and then that material is stretched around a wood frame, giving it that “wrapped image” look. Usually, gallery wrapped canvases are finished on the back with paper or fabric and then the hanging hardware is added to the frame - either a sawtooth hangar or wire hangar.
Some canvas companies (usually the ones who advertise super inexpensive offers!) don’t even use wood as the frame, they use cardboard. And some don’t even finish the back - leaving it open and susceptible to puncture or damage. Our professional gallery wrapped canvases have tight corners and sturdy hanging hardware and will last many years into the future.
Gallery Wrapped Canvas vs. HD CanvasPRO
Our newest canvas product is from our partners at GraphiStudio in Italy. It’s an incredible upgrade from the regular gallery wraps - not only do you get a choice of the material and color for the sides and back, the HD printing really blows the regular canvas out of the water!
The CanvasPro wraps around the edge about a quarter of an inch and has this leather type luxurious feel. The back is customizable in color and material, and has two sturdy hangars that are easy to use and built into the structure of the piece so that the entire thing lays flat against the wall! It’s a true work of art!
